BARON SAMEDI ONLINE SLOT REVIEW
Progressive Jackpot: No
Voodoo-themed online slots are not seen all too often so players will be pleased to see Baron Samedi, a game developed Yggdrasil Gaming that is based on this skeletal character commonly associated with death, rum and smoking cigars.
Baron Samedi is a five-reel slot that has three rows and 25 fixed paylines. The reels spin on a wood and metal tray accessorized with bones, alcohol, cigars, candles and dice. The row above the reels holds cards that are pivotal for the main feature of this game.
Baron Samedi was – or still is –- an essential figure in Haitian Vodou (that’s how they spell voodoo in Haiti). He is known to be the head of the Guédé family of Loa, which refers to the spirits that embody death and fertility in the syncretic religion.
Baron Samedi is often represented with a top hat, dark glasses, black tailcoat, and cotton plugs in his nostrils –typical of how the deceased were prepared in Haiti for their final journey. The game developer took on the challenge of making a video slot that brings the bizarre world of cult and spirits to a set of five slot reels.
The question that comes next is: how do you artistically transition this unique theme to the slot reels? Clearly, though, the game developer has done that very well with the game window resembling a fortune teller’s table, complete with a burning cigar, a glass filled with a blood-like drink, a crow’s skull, and a burning candle. Voodoo cards lie scattered around it.
At the top of the table are cardholders – one for the dealer who will issue the cards in free spins and re-spins, one to display the three dealt cards, and one card collector where players gather cards. A suspenseful drumbeat is only interjected by the usual reel noises and by a dark voice announcing the various slot features.
The Baron Samedi video slot is undoubtedly well designed and does justice to the voodoo theme, but some players might think that they will never fully grasp how it actually works. It all starts to make sense however, once the features have triggered a few times – but until then, it is pretty much guesswork.
Still, players will find Baron Samedi highly entertaining with a medium variance and medium win potential. Are you ready to face the spirits from Haitian Vodou?
The high-value symbols include the Baron, his wife Maman Brigitte and two voodoo dolls. Gems of red, green, blue and purple make up the lower values.
The animal skull is wild and it will substitute for all others to help make winning matches except for the skull bonus symbol.
The little stack of cards above the reels on the right is your collection of cards and these are earned during the Voodoo Respins and Free Spins rounds. There are four levels of cards and they all award variations of the following:
This is triggered by landing two of the skull bonus symbols anywhere in view for which you’ll receive one free re-spin. You will be dealt three cards from the top left pack and the features on those cards will apply to this spin. The cards are then added to your collection.
You can trigger this by landing three, four or five of the skulls anywhere in view for which you’ll receive 7, 12 or 15 free spins respectively. On each spin, you’ll get three more cards and their associated features, which are then added to your collection. If a card collection is completed then three extra spins are awarded with that card locked in the first card position above the reels.
